Creative & Tax-Efficient Ways to Give
Generosity doesn’t always have to come from your checking or savings account.
For many of us, some of the greatest resources God has entrusted to us are held in investments, retirement accounts, property, businesses, and other assets. There may be creative and tax-efficient ways to use those resources to make an even greater Kingdom impact.
As we take this historic step together and build a permanent home for Shore Christian Church, we invite you to prayerfully consider not only how much you can give, but how you can give.
Below are several creative giving options you may want to explore with your financial or tax advisor.
Invest in the Future of Shore Christian Church
STOCKS & MUTUAL FUNDS
If you own stocks, mutual funds, or other investments that have increased significantly in value, donating the asset directly rather than selling it first may be a tax-efficient way to give.
For qualifying long-term appreciated securities, a direct charitable gift may allow you to avoid recognizing capital gains on the donated asset while potentially receiving a charitable deduction, subject to applicable tax rules.
This can allow more of the value of your investment to go toward building the future of Shore Christian Church.
Before selling appreciated investments that you intend to use for your campaign gift, consider speaking with your financial or tax advisor about donating the asset directly.
IRA CHARITABLE GIVING
For those age 70½ or older, a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) may provide another tax-efficient opportunity to give.
Eligible individuals may be able to direct funds from an IRA directly to Shore Christian Church. A qualifying distribution is generally excluded from taxable income and may also count toward your Required Minimum Distribution, when applicable.
If you are considering using retirement assets to support the campaign, talk with your IRA custodian and tax advisor before making the distribution.
REAL ESTATE
God may have blessed you with resources that aren’t held in a bank account.
In certain circumstances, real estate—including residential, commercial, rental property or undeveloped land—can be used to make a charitable gift.
Gifting appreciated real estate may provide significant tax advantages compared with selling the property first and then donating the proceeds. Because real estate gifts can involve additional legal, tax and administrative considerations, please contact us before initiating a transfer.
BUSINESS & OTHER
NON-CASH ASSETS
For business owners and entrepreneurs, some of your greatest financial resources may be tied up in the business you have spent years building.
Depending on the circumstances, privately held business interests, LLC or partnership interests and other appreciated assets may be used to fund charitable giving.
These gifts require careful planning and should be discussed with your professional advisors and Shore Christian Church before any transfer takes place.
DONOR ADVISED FUND (DAF)
If you’ve already established a Donor-Advised Fund, please consider directing a portion of those charitable dollars toward our mission by recommending a grant through your DAF sponsor. It’s an easy and meaningful way to make an impact using funds you’ve already designated for charitable giving.
LEGACY GIVING
This building is about much more than where we worship today. It is about creating a place where children, families and future generations can encounter Jesus for decades to come.
You may choose to make Shore Christian Church part of your legacy through your will, trust, retirement-account beneficiary designation, life insurance or other estate plans.
A legacy gift is an opportunity to continue investing in God’s Kingdom beyond your lifetime and help ensure that the ministry of Shore Christian Church continues impacting generations to come.
Build Something That Outlives Us
Imagine that years ago you purchased an investment for $25,000 that is now worth $100,000.
You want to use that $100,000 investment to make a gift toward the building campaign.
One option is to sell the investment and then give the cash. However, selling could result in capital-gains tax on the appreciation.
Another option may be to donate the appreciated investment directly.
Depending on your individual circumstances and applicable tax laws, doing so may allow you to avoid recognizing the capital gain on the donated investment while potentially qualifying for a charitable deduction.
The result: potentially less going toward taxes and more going toward Kingdom impact.
This is why we encourage you to speak with your financial or tax advisor before selling an appreciated asset that you are considering using for your campaign gift.
WHAT COULD CREATIVE GIVING LOOK LIKE?
Whether you give through cash, investments, retirement assets, property or another creative method, every gift represents something much greater than a financial contribution.
Together, we are building a permanent home where people will find Jesus, families will grow, children and teenagers will discover their purpose, people will find community, and generations will be changed.
We are not simply building a building.
We are building for generations.
